Air Travel
From LoveToKnow Business
Air travel for business travelers can get complicated. As with most security and safety issues, common sense prevails. Keep these tips in mind to make sure that your trip goes smoothly with no delays.
Air Travel Check-In Guidelines
Homeland security and terrorism threats have changed the way airlines operate so be sure to check with the terminal for procedures about loading and unloading of passengers, parking and pick-ups by others. Tightened security methods often cause delays so check in early. Know what you can or can’t take with you. Luggage will be scanned. Airport X-ray scanners will not damage film, video or computer equipment, so don‘t fret. Expect long lines at the ticket counter. After check-in, go directly to your gate’s secure area.
Air Travel Common Sense
Never leave your luggage or briefcase unattended, even while checking in or once in the terminal’s safe area. Airline security forces may rightfully assume that an unattended bag is a bomb, forcefully opening and destroying it in the process. Schedule air travel terminal connections well in advance. Do not make last minute mad dashes to the airport or through the terminal.
Keep Your Luggage Locked And Secure
The Department of Transportation’s Aviation Consumer Protection Division air travel recommendations include packing ID tags inside and attaching luggage tags on the outside of each piece containing your name, address and home/business phone numbers. Carry extra cash, ID, meds, clothes, toiletries or anything else you might need for the first 24 hours of your stay, just in case your luggage is misplaced.
The usual manufacturer luggage locks are insufficient deterrents. Buy separate keyed locks and use these instead. Wrap a strip of nylon filament packing tape around each suitcase to insure it stays closed should it be drop-kicked or otherwise mistreated by baggage handlers. Use only hard-shell luggage because they are harder to get into. Soft material cases can be cut. If your luggage has combination locks, reset the factory combinations with different ones for the left and right locks. Do the same on single lock units. Check with the airline about lost luggage coverage and procedures for putting in a claim. Spray paint an ID mark on each piece of luggage that you can easily recognize and grab off the baggage transport system.
Update Passports And Visas
Keep documents updated. Make photocopies of your passport, visa and other important documents. Put copies in your carry-on and checked luggage. This makes it easier to replace your identification documents should anything happen. Keep your passport with you at all times. The only time that you should surrender it is to the hotel when registering or to the police when asked.
Carry Medical Records With You
Pack prescription medications, an extra set of eyeglasses or contact lenses in a carry-on bag. Keep photocopies of your prescriptions in case your glasses, contacts or medications need to be replaced if they are lost. Carry a list of medications and doses in your wallet or purse. Pack a medical records list of your blood type, allergies, medical conditions and special needs.
