Avery Labels
From LoveToKnow Business
Labels Are Big Business
Avery labels are widespread in homes and offices around the world. They also appear on store products, highway safety signs and in automobiles. In 2005, Avery Dennison enjoyed 5.5 billion in sales. Founded in 1935, the company appears as number 393 on the Fortune 500 list of large U. S. corporations. Part of their popularity is based on an enormous number of choices in their product lines.
Types of Avery Labels
Sometimes it seems there are too many types of Avery labels. It’s easy to get lost in the vast selection. Those who have difficulty making decisions may require assistance when shopping for Avery labels. A simple need for a label for an expense report file requires a choice between:
- Removable
- Permanent
- Extra large
- Hanging file tabs
The same is true for shipping. An Avery label assortment includes:
- Foil
- Plain
- Send and reply tear off
- To and from
- Weatherproof
Special use labels, like these make it tough not to order one of every kind:
- CD
- Foil stars
- Certificate seals
- Notary seals
- Binder labels
- Postage meter
- Fragile
- Handle with care
After selecting the type of Avery label, the choices continue.
- Color
- Size
- Shape
- Foil
- Clear adhesive
User Friendly Templates
Anyone who has tried to print labels has worked with templates. These tell the computer and printer where to place the words and/or designs on the label when it prints. Avery label templates are user-friendly and easy to access. In some of their product styles, customers can request free blank templates by email. Once the return email arrives, simply save the template on the computer. Open the file in Microsoft Word and add text and/or graphics.
Those who use Microsoft Word will find a large selection of Avery lable templates already included with the program. Consult your Word help file for step-by-step directions.
Helpful Free Downloads
A free download for Microsoft Office Wizard.3.0 is available at the Avery Label website. It offers easy access and printing through major databases and spreadsheet programs, such as Outlook or Excel.
ProWrite is a software program that supports over 100 Avery products. A special version (not the full package) is available as a free download. It includes a special offer for a free 15-day trial of the full version of ProWrite.
Print Individual Labels
There are still a lot of handwritten envelopes coming through the U. S. Post Office. In many cases, it is easier to write out the address than set up the computer and printer for just a few labels. There are machines are available that can print either one or multiple labels.
Avery Dennison Label Printer
If it functions correctly, the ‘automatic peeling’ feature of their 9100 Model may be worth the price of the printer. Avery claims that this device separates the label from its’ backing as it prints. Anyone who works with labels will appreciate this innovation. Best of all, this device can eliminate the expense of using laser or ink jet cartridges for labels.
This five-pound printer can be operated with AA batteries or an AC adapter. It comes with a USB cable, in case customers prefer to attach it to their computer, and it prints 16 die-cut labels per minute.
Sticker designs are formatted with preloadedDesignPro software. The machine prints roll labels, currently available in four sizes:
- Address
- Filing
- Return address
- Shipping/Name Badge
Requirements for printing Avery labels include:
- Windows 98/ME, 2000, or XP operating systems
- Pentium (or equivalent) processor
- 30MB free hard disk space
- 128MB RAM
- 8x speed CD-ROM drive
On the Avery website, this label printer costs $149.95; however, it is offered at other sites for around $95.
Brother Label Printer
Similar portable machines are offered by Brother. Their models are also versatile and can be powered by AA batteries or an AC adapter. A USB cable, label design software, templates, and drivers are also included.
- Model PT2600 is the most basic version. Customers can choose among:
- 8 Fonts
- 8 Sizes
- 10 Styles
- Model PT-3600 offers expanded options:
- 10 Fonts
- 25 Sizes
- 14 Styles
Summary
With so many options, the possibilities for using Avery labels seem unlimited. Avery has successfully created a market for their products and a good reputation among consumers.

Hi Marvin,
To create a label that will print an image you will need "visual software" to make it work. Here are a couple links to help you find it:
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladSorry, but I am a slow learner I would like to place a picture on a return address label. I have saved the templet and brought it up in word when I put the picture in the label area, I can not print the address by the side of the picture. How or can I make that work on the label? I think "word" sees the picture as a block and that is why it won't let me type beside the picture on the same label. I will gladly send you the info. as I want it to be on the label as I have it in word if you can use it in that fashion. Picture on one label and printed address on the next label. Thanks Marvin
