Business Networking

From LoveToKnow Business

Business networking is an essential art. Business after all, is people, customers, clients and associates. Others we meet along the way become our friends and colleagues. But saying that, how do you effectively network if you’ve never learned how?

Networking Can Be Terror That Strikes Deep

If you lack public speaking skills and the thought of shaking hands with strangers while introducing yourself fills your heart with dread, then perhaps networking isn’t for you. But if you’re a real entrepreneur up to the challenge, mastering networking is another of those little bumps in the road that you hit along the path well traveled. Keep in mind that everyone you meet was at one time a beginner like yourself. Those individuals have the experience you lack. So, pull up your socks, suck it up and move forward. To build a business you must network, like it or not. Like any other skill you may be lacking, now’s the time to start learning and overcoming.

Business Networking Contacts Are People Too

There’s no magic rationale. People are the same all over. You can’t think in terms of “prospect” or “contact” or especially “a sale” when you meet folks. What you think will be somehow transmitted consciously or unconsciously, and people will pick up on your motive for meeting them. After all, all of business is built on contacts and networking. Acting as if that isn’t the primary reason you attend business social events, open houses, grand openings, chamber of commerce meetings and the like, is just plain silly. Everyone is there for the same reason. But how you do this that is the art.

One Handshake At A Time

If you quake at the prospect of meeting people, think about what it took for the sports or business masters to get where they are today. It takes practice. Most of these accomplished masters of business networking got there because they worked at it. Scratch the surface of any successful networked and you may find an individual who used to quake at the prospect, just like you.

The only way to get better at business networking is to practice. The best way is to approach everyone you meet that appears sharp. Keep in mind that while you’re not recruiting anyone for a multilevel marketing plan, those you approach may be thinking of this and be wary. Just introduce yourself and strike up a conversation. Ask what they do. Many will be happy to tell you. Some will be skeptical and tell you to take a hike. Others may faint dead away. It doesn’t matter. Each time you score and make contact, that’s one more notch in your belt. And you may even get a good business contact out of it. Approach everybody, especially those folks driving business vehicles. Those are the easiest contacts to make.
