Corded Phones

From LoveToKnow Business

Corded phones are steadfast standbys in a world where communications technology rapidly changes. But gone are the old stand-alones, replaced by multi-function multi-line models. Older technology isn’t worth buying. The key is get just enough technology to match your needs, and then add a smidgen of new features that you may be using in the future as your business needs change. Generally, the old law of getting what you pay for still applies. Cheap phones break more often than more expensive models, and lack the features that a small business must have. Bottom line: make a good investment in your telephony future. Match need to technology.

Corded Phone Basics

Unlike their cordless counterparts, corded phones can be operated near computers without much concern about RF interference as long as each unit is constructed with sufficient shielding. But while a corded phone may be better for overall performance near your PC or Mac, what about when you need to move farther away and still receive calls?

The best solution for any small business be it operating out of a home or small facility, is to purchase a corded phone for use as a base unit and a Cordless Phone handset with a rechargeable base. Because technology is rapidly changing, purchasing a cordless phone using a 2.4-Ghz frequency band isn’t a good idea. These phones are prone to RF interference, not to mention calls are more easily intercepted by anyone lurking nearby with an RF scanner.

5.8-Ghz frequency band cordless phones are less susceptibility to RF interference because fewer products currently using the 5.8 GHz band. A better choice is a DSS "802.11-friendly" phone which provides additional security and is not as likely to interfere with wireless computer networks. A good feature to have if your business has several computers hooked up in multiple locations.

Corded Phone Features

Digital is the best choice among several product lines. Look for a listing of features including: two-line capability with line in-use indicators, 50-75 number Caller ID/Call Waiting, speakerphone, 3-way call conferencing, multi-number memory, digital answering system with LED digital message counter/message waiting indicator, and voice time/day stamp, up to 10 handset expandability, easy-to-read display screen, mute and hold functions, a Do not Disturb setting, volume control, one-touch redial, wall-mounting option, mailboxes, playback controls, conversation recording and ability to record customizable messages to greet your callers and redirect them to Voice mail. Prices range from $59-$300 depending upon the number of features you need.

Check The Fine Print When Purchasing

While models differ in the amounts and quality of features that they offer, be wary of sale items that may be more hoopla than fact. Choose a store that has a generous return policy because you won’t know if your phone will create any interference problems for your desktop computer. And be sure that the Call Waiting function can be easily disabled, since this feature could interfere with your DSL equipment. While you can’t take the phone for a test drive, you can check out comfort fits of receiver to head, key size and display. Get the most feature-packed model you can that is the easiest to operate. You don’t want to be hunting for the operator’s manual when a call comes in.

Should You Get A Warranty?

Definitely. Protect your investment with a good power surge device for $50-$50, but get a warranty, since computer chips resident in corded phones can be fried by any small power spike. When your phone dies in a few years, and it will, use the warranty to kick up your telephony tech choice to the next level of what’s available then.
