Writing a Resume: Getting Started

The first step in putting together a resume is to consider what type of work you are looking for. If you are interested in a few different positions, prepare more than one version of your resume. Each version should be written to target the specific job title that interests you.

Once you establish what kind of work you are looking for, make a list of companies for which you would like to work. When you look for work, don’t limit your search to advertised job openings; these only represent a small percentage of all available jobs. Many positions are never advertised. For this reason, it makes sense to apply to companies you find attractive even if they aren't currently advertising an opening for the job that interests you. Talking to people you know about your job search and asking them to let you know of applicable openings is another effective strategy. Jobs are often found through this type of networking.

How To Compose an Objective Statement for Your Resume

The objective statement near the top of your resume outlines the goal you want to accomplish. Many people keep their objective statement purposefully vague. For example, they write something along these lines: “I am looking for a position where I can utilize my skills and abilities to advantage.” This vague objective statement wouldn't capture the attention of the person reading your resume. Put yourself in the shoes of the hiring manager at XYZ Company; would this objective statement make you want to continue reading the resume, or would it end up in the trash during the screening process?

If the person in charge of hiring is looking to fill a specific position, then including that job title in the objective statement will help get their attention.

Example Objective Statement Resume: Simplicity Counts

When composing your objective statement for your resume, keep it simple and to the point. Your goal is to make it easy for the hiring manager to ascertain that you are applying for the position the company is trying to fill. Instead of a lengthy statement, use the job title you are targeting. Here are some example objective statements for a resume for you to consider:

• "Objective: To obtain a position as a Sales Representative"
• "Objective: Customer Service Representative"
• "Employment Objective: Chemical Engineer"

By keeping the statement brief, you increase the chance of getting your resume selected for further consideration.

Sell Yourself With Your Resume

After you complete your objective statement, your resume will go on to share information about your education and previous employment. The goal here is to show the hiring manager that you are a potential good fit for a job with their company.

Be sure to include any work-related accomplishments on your resume. These include accomplishments that highlight your qualifying skills. For example, if you increased sales for your company, received an award or other type of recognition, or anything noteworthy that is job-related, be sure to include it. Along with this information you will want to include:

• Personal Traits
• Computer or Technical Courses You Have Taken
• Your GPA (if 3.0 or Higher)

By adding this type of personal information, you allow the person reading your resume to get an idea of what kind of employee you would make. If they can picture you fitting into the organization, you are more likely to be contacted for an interview and offered the job.
