Interview Thank You Notes
From LoveToKnow Business
Sending interview thank you notes isn't just good manners; it can also increase your chances of getting hired.
Why Send Thank You Notes
The vast majority of job seekers don't send thank you notes after job interviews. This simple step is a way that you can stand out from the other candidates for a position. The interviewer will remember your thoughtfulness. Your actions may make the difference between your receiving a job offer or being passed over for the opportunity.
Guidelines for Interview Thank You Notes
- Interview thank you notes are usually handwritten and mailed to the interviewer within 24 hours of the meeting. For positions in the technology industry, sending the thank you note by e-mail is considered acceptable by hiring managers.
- Start off by telling the recipient how much you enjoyed meeting with him or her. If you were interviewed by more than one person, prepare separate thank you notes for each person who was on the panel.
- Tell the interviewer why you feel that you are a good fit for the position. Be specific about the skills and abilities you have that would benefit the company.
- Take the opportunity to provide any additional information you think the interviewer should be aware of. If you feel there was something that was not clear during the interview, you can address it in the body of your thank you note.
- Before you sign the interview thank you notes you are writing, you need to end on a positive note. Tell the interviewer how excited you are at the prospect of becoming a member of the company team.
Following Up After the Interview
Your thank you note can also indicate what you are planning to do now that you have had your interview. Here are your options:
- Wait for the interviewer to contact you
- Call or e-mail the interviewer to find out your status
If you tell the recipient that you will be calling or e-mailing after a certain amount of time has passed, then be sure to do so. This tells the prospective employer that you are a person of integrity who does what they say they are going to do.
If You Didn't Get the Job
There is a place for interview thank you notes if the meeting didn't go very well and you are told that you are no longer being considered for the position you applied for. Rather than taking the news as being the employer's final word on the subject, you can choose to respond graciously and thank the hiring manager for:
- Taking the time to let you know what your status is
- Having considered you for the position
You can let the hiring manager know that you would be interested in being considered for other positions with the company if they become available in the future. Simply because you are not the best fit for the current opportunity doesn't mean that you wouldn't be able to perform well in a different role with that company. It's possible that the first choice for the position may choose not to accept the company's offer or doesn't end up staying on the job for a long time.
Preparing the Thank You Notes
If you are going to be sending interview thank you notes by regular mail, visit a stationery store to find blank "Thank You" cards. You will want to use blue or black ink for writing the note. Keep in mind that this is professional correspondence, and using neon colors probably won't give the reader the right impression about you.
You can take a blank piece of paper and write out a draft version of your thank you note first. Once you are happy with the text, then you can go ahead and transcribe it onto your note paper.
Writing interview thank you notes is a simple way to stand out from the other candidates who are trying to get hired for a position with a company. This simple step may lead to your receiving a job offer, and the recipient will appreciate the fact that you took the time to write.
