Pre-Designed Memo Templates

If you prefer a professional pre-designed template, a variety of both paid and free memo templates are available. The following are some of the most widely used resources:

Microsoft Word Templates

Microsoft Word, part of the Microsoft Office family, contains a small selection of memo templates. Microsoft Office provides the additional option of creating memo templates in Excel. Additional Word and Excel templates are available online; they are free-of-charge at the Microsoft Office Web site.

To access Word templates, take the following steps: (Note: On some versions of Word, you may skip step 3.)

  1. Select: File
  2. Select: New
  3. Select: On my computer (Under "New Document" > Templates)
  4. Select: The "Memos" tab

Memos: Select from the following:

  • Existing template design (this is the one you should choose)
  • The Memo Wizard
  • Create a new template

Hewlett-Packard

Hewlett-Packard (HP) provides some sharp-looking free memo templates at their web site. The available styles include colored, watermarked and lined. HP's templates, designed for Microsoft Word, are easy to use. Simple instructions, similar to the above, are available at the HP Web site. For best results, HP recommends their own premium-style paper, but, of course, you can use what paper stock works for your needs.

OfficeReady Professional

OfficeReady Professional is a popular commercial program, containing 522 business documents and templates, available on CD or via download. The program includes other features, such as PDF file format conversion.

Fifteen memo templates are included in OfficeReady. Considering the price ($79) and the selection, it is a worthwhile purchase if other product features are utilized. A 30-day limited free-trial is available, though the trial program limits users to viewing memo templates. To examine the templates online, visit the Template Zone Web site.

Microsoft Word Template Wizard

If the pre-existing styles do not appeal to you or you prefer to design your own, the Microsoft Word, Memo Template Wizard makes designing a memo relatively simple. Additionally, the Wizard allows you to use an existing document, such as a company letterhead, as the basis for your design. To create a memo template, follow these steps:

  1. Access the Wizard as above: Select File – New – Memos
  2. Select Memo Wizard and Template (on the same pop-up menu)
  3. Click OK > Then Next
  4. Select a Style > Then Next
  5. Select 'Yes' to create your own title. Select 'No' to use your own form. Fill out the measurement field for the latter. Click Next
  6. Select the header items (Date, From, Subject, Priority,) you wish to include. Fill the fields out or leave them blank. Note: The default setting on 'Date' is numeric, change to alpha-numeric if desired. Click Next.
  7. Fill out, or import, your distribution list as desired. Click Next.
  8. Select closing items, optional header and footer fields. Click Next.
  9. Click Finish.
  10. Save the template to the default Microsoft/Template/ folder so that it is easily accessible. Your template will now be added under File - New - General documents.

  • Move or eliminate the 'CC' field.
