Motivation and Site Operatives

From LoveToKnow Business

The motivation and site operatives of your business can make a huge difference in the productivity of your employees. These are two areas that you, as a business owner, need to pay attention to and streamline.

It is important to keep control of your workplace.

Defining Motivation and Site Operatives

To increase both motivation and site operatives, it helps to understand what exactly these terms mean. Though they are vague terms that encompass many areas of your business, once you pinpoint what they mean for your success you will watch your bottom line rise.

Motivation

Motivation is both energy and the push behind the energy that makes your employees work their best. Every employee is motivated by something different. Be prepared to utilize multiple motivational techniques to include all personality types. If you haven’t already, spend some money and take a course to help you understand different personalities.

Motivation Techniques

A variety of different techniques are available to motivate your work force. One great way to know which technique to implement is an employee survey designed to learn what motivates your employees. When sending out your survey, its good to include a personality test. Some employees just need a “thank you” or “good job” to become motivated to work hard, while others want something to work for, like a raise or title. Here are some example of employee motivation:

  • Money: Cash bonuses are a motivator that catches most employee’s attention. Create contests or goals that offer a cash incentive.
  • Praise: Some employees will work harder when praised. For example, Sue needs to know you think she is doing a good job. Her desire to please others and do things right the first time is what keeps her going. However, if you forget to praise her, she may begin to feel unappreciated and her motivation (and job performance) will drop.
  • Competition: For your employees who like to be the best, competition is a way to get them working hard. Of course you will need some sort of prize for which to compete. Examples of fun competitions are top sales for the month, the most upsales, or most new customers. Look at your numbers and use the competition to boost the areas which your employees are struggling. Be sure to have a minimum requirement to earn the prize.
  • Prizes: Set a goal and offer a prize for every employee who hits it. The prize can be as simple as a pizza party for the office if you have a team goal, or gift certificates to a nice new restaurant. When you send out your survey, ask for ideas on what they would like to see.
  • Appreciation: Some employees just want to feel appreciated. Weekly or monthly “extras” are a great way to get them coming to work. Friday donuts, monthly free lunch or summer barbecues are fun ideas that employees enjoy. Recognizing an employee on her birthday with a card or giant cookie is another bonus.
  • Prestige: It’s all about the title. If your employee knows he is working towards a promotion with a “vice” in the title, or bigger office, chances are he will work harder.
  • Fun: Offer fun in your office! When your employees think work is fun, they will be more motivated to show up on time.

Site Operatives

Site operatives refers to your workplace functionality. For example:

  • Is paperwork easy to find?
  • Are employees trained on all the equipment?
  • Are work spaces kept clean?
  • Does each employee understand his responsibilities?

When your site is unorganized or chaotic, employees can tell. This reflects on their work motivation.

Working Together

Motivation and site operatives work together to create harmony. If your employee’s motivation is lacking, look first at your work site efficiency. No matter how many contests and appreciation luncheons you hold, if your workers do not feel comfortable in their work place, your employee retention will be low.

Some examples of areas where site operatives fall apart include:

  • Phone skills
  • Break procedures
  • Scheduling and asking for time off
  • Cleanliness and responsibility of the workspace
  • Procedures for taking orders, making sales, or even who gets the customer

Successful entrepreneurs understand and utilize the above concepts in running their business. If you are unsure how to get started, consider hiring a consultant to come in and help you regroup.
