Sample Functional Resume
From LoveToKnow Business
The sample functional resume below is a method of presenting what could be perceived as a “questionable” work history in a positive manner. It’s especially useful for de-emphasizing employment gaps, doesn’t identify you as a job hopper or calls attention to the employer that you’ve been in one job too long and your resume has gone stale.
The sample functional resume highlights your job skills, experience and responsibilities, but doesn’t mention where you worked or when. This format is useful for:
- Those who have job-hopped with no apparent career path, had stagnant careers who want to hide a lack of vertical advancement or have held the same position for several companies
- College graduates with little experience
- Professionals who now wish to change careers
- Stay-at-home moms reentering the workforce
- Military personnel making the transition to civilian life
- Older folks wishing to disguise a long work history and deemphasize their age.
You can also create a combination resume which contains your job title, name and location of employer, and work history stated in years employed and list positions in reverse chronological order. Keep in mind that this format doesn’t deemphasize the elements you wish to downplay.
Sample Functional Resume
In essence, the sample functional resume represents one that is harder to write than a chronological resume, because you must summarize what you did and when but still maintain your logical flow. The example that follows is but one way to do this. I’ve tried to do the layout within the limitations of the WIKI format. Remember that white space is a good thing.
Note: The names of companies and individuals are works of fiction. There has been no intentional links to any companies or people, living or deceased.

Hi Katrina,
As a stay at home mom, you have plenty to add to your resume. What skills have you used to manage your household? This is a great tool to highlight your organizational skills. Along these same lines, you can promote yourself as a experience in time management as you juggle and maintain more than one schedule and/or responsibility.
Other items you can include may involve skills use in:
- Involvement in community groups
- Involvement in volunteer organizations
- Activities to promote products
- Interests/hobbies
I am former military, now stay at home mom looking to reenter the workforce. I don't know where to start with my resume, can you offer some help? thanks
