Resumes can be tricky to write, so having a sample resume for students helps both high school and college graduates obtain employment. A student resume follows a different format and pattern than the resume of someone who’s been employed full time for a considerable amount of time. While there’s no one right way to craft a resume, certain elements are proven to catch an employer’s eye and highlight special skills or experiences that can land you the job of your dreams.

An academic resume focuses on the student’s academic gifts and talents. These resumes follow a format very similar to a “professional” format used by workers with a great deal of experience, yet the emphasis remains on school work, grades, and academic honors.

The basic format of an academic resume is as follows:

1. Center and type your name, address, telephone number and email address at the top of the page. Use a simple, clear and business-like font such as Times New Roman, Palatino or Arial.
2. Write a Qualifications Summary. Some resume experts recommend an Objective, but students may wish to summarize their best qualifications in the Qualifications Summary to highlight their best attributes for a recruiter, college admissions officer, or prospective employer.
3. Include a subhead for “Academics” and list your academic honors. Present the information with the latest achievements first.
4. Include another section for “Professional Experience.” In this section you may list all your part time jobs, no matter how small. Include childcare, restaurant work, and any situations where you were paid for your work. This demonstrates responsibility and reliability to prospective employers.

A skill-based student resume highlights special skills and qualifications. Skills to emphasize include rapid typing, filing abilities, special computer programming knowledge, first aid courses or special training, or any other skills for which you’ve won awards, taken classes, earned certifications, or demonstrated on the job for other employers.

A skills-based resume follows the format for the academic style resume, but instead of starting with academic honors, qualifications and highlights, it begins by emphasizing specific and unique skills that set the candidate apart from the rest. Use subheads such as “Computer Programming Languages” or “Special Courses” and bullets to list details underneath the heading. Add a section for academic achievements at the end of the resume, and be sure to include a work history section.
