Sample Teacher Resumes
From LoveToKnow Business
While some resumes downplay education if it doesn’t apply to the prospective position, that element is the foundation of any number of sample teacher resumes. This article demonstrates the specific ways teachers and other instructors can showcase their experience to provide the best competitive advantage.
Tips for Teacher Resumes
Teacher resumes have one major advantage that many resumes do not: they can be two pages long if necessary, and the employer expects that.
Other key factors to remember when creating a teacher resume:
- Both a qualifications summary and a targeted job objective can be included on the resume. The extent of experience will probably dictate this.
- Student teaching experience is a plus. This is especially important for recent education graduates.
- Most employers are looking for noted interests and extracurricular activities. Unlike many occupations, educators are allowed to show a bit more personality on their resumes; however, make sure to maintain a professional tone when detailing these activities.
Also, while most resumes would include certain facts and figures, that’s sometimes hard to do on a teacher’s resume. Nevertheless, use important statistics, results and percentages when you can.

Resources for the Higher Education Instructor
Often, colleges and universities offer resume instruction and critique to their students and alumni. Their Web sites can be a wonderful resource to the high school or university instructor wanting to polish a resume.
Higher education instructors should also make sure to include sabbatical/summer projects and ongoing or concluded research on their resumes. Demonstrating a well-rounded individual outside of the classroom provides a hint as to the style of teaching inside the classroom.
What Format and Style Work Best?
Whatever keeps the reviewer’s eyes moving over key points is the best to use. A teacher's resume is probably the best example of a combination chronological and functional resume, because many teachers are involved in activities that go beyond the typical instructional day and these activities require explanation or, at the very least, a qualitative mention.
Layout style choices fluctuate based on personal preference. Print off a few examples that appeal to you and determine which will present you and your accomplishments as attractively as possible. Don’t forget to use the keywords found in the position and advertisement to help you rise to the top of the “yes” stack.

Hi Marieta,
Much of what is included in a teacher's resume is standard:
- Name - Chose a font 3-4 sizes bigger than the rest of the print on the page for your name.
- Address
- Phone
- Email address.
After your contact info, you'll want to list your certification along with any endorsements. This should be followed by your teaching experience and then the last section can include related experience. In this section you can highlight paid or unpaid work which equips you to be a better teacher.
