Setting business goals is important if you want to turn your dreams for your business into reality.
Step Out of Your Comfort Zone
Entrepreneurs are sometimes hesitant to move out of their comfort zone when the time comes to figure out how to take their business to the next level. If you are going to be setting new goals for the business, why not set the bar high?
Too many people limit themselves by deciding in advance that they can't do something. In the case of a business owner, though, this doesn't make a lot of sense. The fact that someone decided to take the plunge and set up shop on their own means that they are not afraid to take risks.
Setting business goals is no different; it's an opportunity to consider what you want your business to look like over the next few months as well as the next few years. It doesn't take any more effort to write down an ambitious goal as compared to a more conservative one.
Setting Business Goals Using Radical Targets
Instead of deciding that you will increase sales over the next quarter by 10 or 20 percent or call on five more prospective customers each week, consider setting a more radical target for your business. Instead of immediately thinking of all the reasons why it won't work, start at the beginning and figure out exactly what you want to achieve.
Put It in Writing
When you commit to putting your goals in writing, you indicate that this is more than just a wish or a dream. Once you have it on paper, you have a starting point. From there, start to work out a step-by-step plan for how to reach it.
Break it Down into Manageable Steps
Now that you know what you want to accomplish, you need to work up a plan for reaching your goal. If you don't have all the answers, do some research or enlist the help of someone who does. You may need to consider working with a business coach or hiring a consultant to help you stay on track.
Don't hesitate to work with other people who have knowledge or expertise that you lack. If you want to reach your most ambitious goals, you will need to bring in people who share your vision and can help you focus on how to achieve it.
Monitor Your Progress
As you work toward your more ambitious goals, monitor your progress at regular intervals. Plan to check in every month and every quarter to see how your business is doing. You can continue with strategies that are working and make adjustments if something you are trying is not getting the results you want.
Be Persistent
This might go without saying, but if you are looking at a long-term goal that may take a number of years to achieve, you need to keep doing the work necessary to make it a reality. Instead of thinking about how much more you need to do to reach your goal, a better focus is on how much you have accomplished.
Focusing on what has been accomplished may help encourage you to keep working to achieve the goals you have in mind for your business. Think of how you would feel if you realized after you gave up that if you had just worked a little longer, you would have brought your company to the level of success you wanted.
Setting SMART Goals
One popular method for business goal setting is to use SMART goals. This is an acronym that translates to:
- Specific
- Measurable
- Attainable
- Realistic
- Timely
This isn't meant to deter you from dreaming big - but taking a realistic approach on how to achieve your larger business goals can make a big difference.
No matter what you decide to achieve in your enterprise, setting business goals is the key to get there. It's a characteristic of successful entrepreneurs to set the bar high, so don't be afraid to aim higher than your reach. If you don't; you may never know what you can accomplish.
