Starting a Home Business
Many people dream of striking out on their own and starting a home business. The first step to starting any home business is the planning process, which includes writing a business plan. Some people feel a business plan isn’t necessary if a person isn’t seeking financial help from a lending institution, but the fact is, a business plan is the best organizational tool there is to help you focus on what’s important. Having a business plan on hand is always good in case you seek financing.
Why a Business Plan is a Good Idea
A business plan helps you get organized. It forces you to consider the details of your business, from marketing and financing your business to dealing with your competition. The business plan is the strongest element of an organized thinker. When starting a home business, Writing A Business Plan is essential to learn how to do.
Important Aspects of Starting a Home Business
Home Office
Do you have a room, whether a bedroom or some other place in the house that can be reserved just for your home business? Try to set up your home office for business use only. You can also claim it as an expense come income tax time.
Home Equipment
What do you own and need to purchase to have a successful operation for the type of business you’re running? Begin slowly by purchasing the most important items first. Consider leasing larger items like copy machines.
Monthly Business Expenses
What will your expenses include and how much money do you have set aside for operations? Have you made provisions until profits start to flow through?
Licenses and Zoning
Check with your city administration office for information on licenses, permits and fictitious name filings you need to run your particular type of business. Will there be lots of deliveries? Are there zoning restrictions in your area?
Promotional Items
Business cards, letterhead and a web Site are minimum marketing tools you will need..
Business Checking Account
You’ll need a business checking account for tax purposes separated from your personal account.
What Sort of Business Do You Want?
For some, the hardest part of starting a home business is knowing what type of business to start. The key is doing what you enjoy, such as converting a hobby into a business that can earn you money. Other options include buying an already successful business or franchise. Check out local business listings for small businesses for sale. There are companies that specialize in guiding you to the right seller of small businesses. Be sure to consider such an option as you do your research.
Funding Your Small Business
One of the greatest deterrent for people considering starting a home business can be funding. Some businesses are far pricier than others to start. A franchise fits this category. Such an endeavor will undoubtedly require a bank loan. Most franchises, however, are not located in the home, but will require you to lease or buy space in a prominent location.
If your business is non-profit, you might seek out government or private grants. Sometimes you can even count on a wealthy family member to help you with initial start up costs.
Venture capital is another option to consider for funding. There are individuals and institutions that are looking for a good investment, and your small business just might be the perfect fit for them.
Take Classes
Y0u would do well to attend free classes with a small business association in town and take advantage of any materials distributed by these organizations.
Create Awareness In Your Target Market
When setting up a home business, it’s important to notify your target audience that you’re in operation. A small ad in a business paper or journal is a start. You can also start sending out fliers or postcards to your target consumer. Joining the area Chamber of Commerce is another great way to make your business known and respected. Attending their monthly meetings and functions can help your name get out and in turn, gain you new clients.
Establish A Meeting Place
A final thing to keep in mind is where to meet your clients. Home business environments aren’t always good locations for client meetings, so it may be best to go to your client’s business for meetings. If you are planning to have a meeting place in your home, make sure you have a clean professional office, isolated from the rest of your home.
Comments
Hi Rick,
Your business has to be up and running to claim deductions. Then if you conduct research as part of your business, you may deduct the cost of these materials. These deductions can include such things as:
- trade magazines in your business' industry
- reference books
- website subscriptions
I'm looking at starting an Organic Herb business and was wondering if all my research is tax deductible even tho I don't a business license.
Thank you, Rick
