Women Business Attire

From LoveToKnow Business

Depending on the type of business for which they work, what is considered proper women business attire varies. For example, what is considered appropriate in a traditional (conservative) business setting may not be the best choice for someone working in a health-care field.

Women Business Attire and Type of Work

Traditional Businesses

Women working in law firms, banks, or accounting firms need to dress simply and conservatively. A traditional business calls for the traditional business suit in a dark color.

Accessories should be kept simple and non-distracting; save the feathered, dangly earrings for a night out on the town. Instead, choose stud earrings and a watch that blends with the rest of the outfit. Makeup should be applied with a light touch, as should any fragrance you decide to wear.

The Arts

If you work in the advertising, fashion, or entertainment industries you can be a bit more creative in your office attire. Bright colors and interesting fabrics add interest to a look, but don't overdo it. Someone who needs to meet with clients as part of her job may choose to dress a bit more on the conservative side, while a creative person working "behind the scenes" has a bit more freedom in making fashion choices.

In a creative field, accessories can be a bit less conservative. Feel free to wear larger earrings, an oversized watch, or an interesting pin if you like.

Health Care Professions

Proper work wear depends on where the work is taking place. Women working in a hospital setting may be wearing a scrub suit while on duty. A variety of colors are available; colorful patterns can be found for those working with children.

Comfortable, coordinated separates are a good choice for those ladies working in other settings. The goal is to project an image of professionalism and approachability. As in the case of traditional business settings, accessories should be kept simple.

Manufacturing, the Trades, etc.

If the workplace is a construction site or a manufacturing facility, go for clothing that is comfortable and fits well. If you choose to wear a T-shirt, make sure it fits well without being clingy. Choose footwear appropriate to your job function (safety shoes/boots or comfortable shoes with good arch supports). If your job requires you to wear safety goggles or other equipment, do so (no exceptions).

Basic Rules for Business Attire

Clothing should be clean, neat, and in good repair.

There is very little point in wearing a $1,000 suit if there is a button missing. Give your outfit the once-over before you leave for work and either correct the problem or change into something else.

The little things count.

Check your shoes or boots: are the heels run down? Do you need lifts replaced? Do they need to be polished? These simple things are often overlooked and do make a difference to the image one is trying to project.

Consider your environment.

A place of business is no place for beach wear. It may be Casual Friday at the office, but don't carry the "Casual" part too far. Keep your shoulders and tummy covered during the work day.

Business Casual Attire

If the occasion calls for business casual dressing, women can choose to wear a pantsuit, separates, or skirts. Blouses, sweaters, or sweater sets (not too clingy) may be worn. For footwear, choose something with a closed toe and heel over a strappy sandal.

Women business attire varies depending on the environment or location where the work is being performed. The goal is to look neat and professional, no matter where you spend your work day. Some businesses have a written dress code for workers; if your employer has this type of policy, familiarize yourself with it so you can dress appropriately.
