I have tried writing dispute letters myself and gotten denied repeatedly. BestCreditRepairLetters.com is a site ran by volunteer credit repair experts that offers credit dispute letters for credit inquires, late comments, collections, charge-offs, etc. They have examples on the website that show their letters work.

Hadeel, you must speak with whatever company is looking for payment. Try to discuss it with them first and get a recommendation on what to do. Good luck!

All of the letters that I have sent to the credit bureaus are working for me. So my luck goes out to you and others about your situations. It did work for me.

Hi Tony,

Unfortunately, you have to stay on top of this situation. If you don't hear back, make contact. Write a letter so you have copies of your efforts and follow it up with a phone call. You may have to follow this procedure more than once throughout the process.

How will the dispute or correction be resolved if the bureau does not respond with details of there actions whether a correction or denial of the request, within the 30 day period? Will they simply update your credit report eventually or do you have to recontact them and inform them of there mistake again and demand they remove it, because they did not respond in the legal alotted time frame.

Hi Tasha,

You've produced a good first draft. I know we don't allow posting of personal contact information here at LoveToKnow, but be sure to include the following in your letter:

  • Full name as listed on the credit report
  • Your Social Security number
  • Name of the agency which generated the report
  • Go into more detail regarding the reasons the listing is wrong. If you have do...entation proving the error send copies along with your letter.
  • Be sure to include contact phone numbers so you can be reached at any time.

RE: Erroneous items on my credit report

To whom it may concern:

This letter is a formal complaint that you are reporting inaccurate and incomplete credit information.

Because I'm not sure what information that you require regarding each account. I have enclosed a copy of my credit report with the disputed items circled, and the explanations written right next to them.

By provisions of 15 US section 1681i of the Fair Credit Reporting Act, these items need to be investigated. Please provide me with proof or these items, specifically the contract, note or other instrument bearing my signature or a do...ent record of the payment history.

Failing that, please update the record to show PAID IN FULL, NEVER LATE, or delete the item from the credit report as soon as possible.

The circled items are completely inaccurate and incomplete, and are a very serious error in reporting. Please update or delete the misleading information, and supply a corrected credit profile to all creditors who have received a copy within the last 6 months.

Additionally, please provide the name, address, and telephone number of each credit grantor or other subscriber.

Also, pursuant to 15 US section 168i (6) (A) of the Fair Credit Reporting Act, please provide me with the description of the procedure used to determine the accuracy and completeness of the information to be provided within 15 days of the completion or your reinvestigation.

Sincerely,

Hi Tina,

This method can be used to clear up errors no matter who generates them. Even if a business makes a mistake like this, it will show up on your credit report.

-- Contributed by: Donna Sundblad

Is this method used only if the Credit reporting agency (Transunion, Equifax, etc.) screwed up the reporting, or can this method of action also be used if some company screwed you over by reporting incorrect information that wound up on your credit report?

I have recently bagan a small wedding planning business and when I started digging deep into my credit I was completely dismayed at what is on my credit report. I was born in 1975 and on my credit report there is an account that was opened in 1978....how is that possible I was 3 years old??? There are a number of items on my credit report that I have no clue where they came from or how to get rid of them. I am about to write my first dispute letter and I thank you for having a template available because I did not even know where to start. Donna Cook, Baton Rouge, LA
