Hi John, any articles that deal in general with starting a business would be applicable to your lawn sprinkler business. In general, you'll need to figure out a few things, such as what type of business you want to own (sole proprietorship, limited liability company, corporation), laws or rules pertaining to sprinkler businesses, and any permits you might need. A business lawyer and accountant can guide you through the first steps, and many offer free consultations. You may also want to check out the Small Business Administration (SBA) or SCORE offices. SCORE is a group of retired business people that offer free advice to help entrepreneurs. Look in your local phone book or online for an office near you.

Hi Lolita,

That is quite a diverse set of services. Many of them could be grouped under a travel agency type service, but with all those different services, you'd have to have the staff to support what needs to be done, along with connections to make it happen. I would suggest you start off with services that are related. Like:

  • Ticketing
  • Hotel bookings
  • Arranging tour bookings

Once you have that part of the business established, you could afford to branch out and offer more services.

Hi Mai,

To start a mailing service, the first thing you'll want to do is choose your venue. Maling services can:

  • provide mailing lists to direct marketers
  • act as a direct mailer
  • offer co-op mailing services

With today's technology, you can also create emailing services. As you draw up your business plan, you'll have to decide what type of mailing service you want to run

Here are questions to ask yourself to narrow your focus:

  • Are you going to sell mailing lists to other mailing services?
  • Are you going to mail marketing materials, magazines or newsletters?
  • Who will your vendors be? (With a co-op mailing system, you should have advertisers provide their own copies of printed material.) If you plan to "direct mail" or provide printed do...ents, locate a printer and paper supplier.
  • What will your prices be? You'll have to keep your prices competitive but still make a profit.

Other items you'll need include a bulk postage permit.

To help make your decision, evaluate the profit and loss for each product.

I have an essay to write, and I need information on how to start a mailing and delivery service business, like UPS and USPS. I've seen lots of 'mail order businesses' but that's not what I need or am looking for. What are the differences and what is needed for mailing service?
